Rachel McCorkle

Grade?

9th

Parents Names/siblings?

Eddie and Jennifer McCorkle, brother Nathan

How many years have you played tennis?

10 years

Favorite part about tennis?

Tennis can be a challenging sport to play due to the focus on the individual players performance.  When I get the opportunity to play as part of a team such as NOAH or USTA Team Tennis, it allows me to enjoy playing in a different aspect than singles.  Doubles is also a chance to share the court with a partner, working together to achieve the win. This is usually a fun part of the USTA tournaments for me and a great way to get to know other players.

Do you know any of your stats?

I am currently ranked 36th in the Missouri Valley

Do you want to play tennis in college?

Yes

How do you set your goals?

Small goals that all lead up to bigger goals

What one or two things do you currently do in your training that are keys to your success?

Conditioning, mental preparation

What would be your ultimate achievement?

I really haven’t looked past my goal of college tennis yet.

What is your biggest challenge, and what do you do to manage this challenge?

It is very hard for  me to get in a mental state of mind where i can block out the score, all the distractions around me and believe in my stroke. Sometimes before a match i just need someone to tell me to forget about winning or losing, enjoy the game of tennis, and just HIT THE BALL.

Do you have any “before match rituals?”

I need to get to a quiet place to quiet my mind and get mentally ready for the match ahead.

Have you experienced a breakthrough, and if so, what led to it?

I’ve come the the realization that the right strokes, technique and conditioning are important pieces of the equation for success in tennis, but if you do not have the mental part of the game conquered, success will be hard to achieve.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Enjoy what you do.

Do you have a saying/Bible verse or motto that you live your life by?

There are so many important verses that are relevant in shaping my daily choices, I would have a hard time picking just one.

People who influenced me the most/Why?

I have a wonderful group of coaches who support me in my development.  Without them, I would not have achieved much of anything.  My Uncle is the biggest influence, however.  He understands when I get stuck in a rut with my game and always seems to be able to help me through it.

What do you think is the key to team success?

Each person on the team giving it their best and working together for the good of the group.

How do you deal with a loss?

Learn what I did wrong and what I could do better, then put the loss behind me and have a good meal.

How do you celebrate a win?

Again, usually with a good meal. The wins and losses cannot be emphasized more that development. But winning sure does feel better than a loss.

My sports hero when I was younger?

My sister

Favorite school subject?

Science (not counting tennis)
