NOAH ace shines
In a marquee matchup, NOAH’s Matt Merrill outdueled 3A No. 3 Metro Christian and Brody Gibson 1-0 in the final of the Inola Invitational.
Merrill, a 6-foot-3 right-hander with draft potential, allowed only three hits with five strikeouts and permitted only one man to reach third.
Merrill throws consistently at 88-89 mph in games and is at 91-92 in the bullpen, coach Darron Replogle said. He has signed with NCAA Division II’s Pittsburg State and has sparked the interest of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Seattle Mariners.
“They like his arm. He’s pretty fluid,” Replogle said. “I think he’s a Division I pitcher and his pitching coach (former big leaguer George Frazier) does, too.”
Saturday’s win gave the Jaguars (8-6) five in a row. They’re hoping to peak for their May return to Auburndale, Florida, to defend their 2016 title in the Homeschool World Series. Seniors Ben Replogle and Nano Moss batted .500 and .430 in the winning streak.
